Asheville Psychiatrist

FAQ’s

What can you expect when you consult with Dr. Marder?

A sensitive and comprehensive diagnostic evaluation that  includes your reasons for seeking psychiatric care; past psychiatric, medical, developmental, family history, and previous therapies. We’ll also go over diet, lifestyle/exercise, environmental factors, and psychological stressors.  Because I do a longer initial visit, we cover more ground and can produce a more comprehensive treatment plan that incorporates a collaborative approach.

What is an integrative approach to psychological wellness and healing?

For me, an integrative approach means applying holistic modalities such as hypnotherapy, and lifestyle changes when possible and appropriate but also applying modern science with compassion when needed and having the wisdom to know the usefulness of each intervention with any particular person.

What is hypnotherapy like?

Hypnotherapy is an altered state of consciousness in which you are relaxed but with a high level of focus which allows ideas to be communicated more effectively to enhance motivation and change perceptions.  I like to think of it as similar to when you are about to fall asleep at night but still alert to the sounds around you. I find hypnotherapy useful in treating anxiety issues such as panic attacks, OCD, trauma, and phobias,  as well as quitting smoking, unresolved grief, weight loss, peak performance and somatic complaints.

Do you take insurance, and how does that work?

This is what I call a fee-for-service practice. I do not accept insurance, but I do provide a superbill so you can bill your own insurance if you have out-of-network coverage. We do, however, request payment at time of service. Before making an appointment, you may want to inquire about your insurer’s deductible and reimbursement rates for out-of-network services by a board-certified psychiatrist.

Can you help me get off my medication?

If that is your goal, we can talk about strategies to make steps in that direction. Of course, as part of the initial evaluation, I have to come to a clear understanding of your history and circumstances to fully appreciate what is realistic for you.  In truth, anyone can come off medication, but the real goal is come off medication successfully and I’ve seen that happen most often with lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, supplements, meditation, stress reduction).
